Pharma marketing is the act of advertising or otherwise promoting the sale of pharmaceuticals or drugs.
Pharma Marketing has a long and detailed history. Pharma marketing offers the promise of miracle cures, and often viably so. Pharma marketing of medication that does not need prescription also has a well-established history. Mass pharma marketing of prescription medications was rare until recently, however.

Because Doctors make the selection of drugs, it was thoroughly believed that mass pharmaceutical marketing was a waste of resources; smaller strategies were more often used, targeted at specific groups of professionals as this was seen as being cheaper. This type of pharma marketing would include adverts in scientific journals and sales visits to doctor’s offices and hospitals. A large portion of this pharma marketing was aimed at medical students.
The importance of marketing pharmaceuticals is clearer now than it has been in years. Without wide scale marketing there will not be widespread knowledge of what drugs are available. Of course it’s also important to look at the facts behind the medication that is out there, because pharmaceutical companies have such a high turnover of products that it’s possible that some do not thoroughly investigate the impact of their medication.
Pharma marketing is however quite a controversial area as there are many ethical issues regarding the use of publicity to disperse medication to the general population. One of these issues is that potentially dangerous drugs become much easier to source than they otherwise would with the presence of pharma marketing. The marketing of pharmaceuticals is however a vitally necessary area as it brings the information to the general public as opposed to allowing a middleman, your GP, to do the deciding on your behalf. After all, there could be many reasons why a Doctor may pick a one treatment over a more effective treatment. |
