How often should I routinely test for STIs?

If you are sexually active, we recommend that you take an STI test once a year, even if you have no symptoms or are in a long-term, monogamous relationship.

You should test more regularly if you:

  • have multiple sexual partners
  • get tested every 3 months
  • are starting a new relationship
  • have noticed any STI symptoms
  • have had unprotected sex with someone who has or could have an STI

When should I test for STIs?

Most STIs don't show up in a test straight away. This means that you may need to wait a few weeks before a test will be accurate. This time is called the window period.

If you test for an STI too early, you may test negative for the disease even if you have it. Follow these guidelines on when to test to ensure accurate results:

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: 2 weeks after exposure
  • HIV: 6 weeks after exposure
  • Syphilis: 6 weeks after exposure
  • Hepatitis B: 12 weeks after exposure
  • Hepatitis C: 8 weeks after exposure, but it may take up to 6 months

Which test should I take?

Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea

These are common bacterial infections that are passed on through unprotected sex. Most people who become infected do not experience any symptoms.

Symptoms Risk factors Treatment
  • Changes in vaginal discharge
  • Bleeding in between periods or after sex
  • Mild lower abdominal pain
  • Discharge from the penis
  • Pain in the testicles
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Unprotected sex (vaginal, oral, anal)
  • Sharing sex toys
  • Infected semen or vaginal fluid getting into the eye
  • Those under 25 years old
  • Men who have sex with men

Chlamydia is easily treatable with a course of antibiotics. You will be prescribed either Doxycycline or Azithromycin.

Treatment for Gonorrhoea involves having an antibiotic injection.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a preventable and curable bacterial infection that can cause permanent damage to your organs if left untreated. It can spread through sexual contact, in pregnancy and through blood transfusion.

Symptoms Risk factors Treatment
  • In the first stage, one or more sores may develop on your genitals
  • In the second stage, you may get a rash (usually on the palms and soles of the feet) and experience flu-like symptoms
  • In the third stage, the symptoms are hidden (latent stage)
  • Unprotected sex (vaginal, oral, anal)
  • Sharing sex toys
  • Infected semen or vaginal fluid getting into the eye

Syphilis is treated with antibiotics, most commonly a single injection for early-stage syphilis. For later stages or complicated cases, additional doses may be required.

HIV

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, weakening the body's ability to fight infections and diseases.

Symptoms Risk factors Treatment
  • Flu-like symptoms which occur 2-6 weeks after the infection. These may include a fever, sore throat, or body rash.
  • The infection continues to weaken the immune system. This can cause:

    - weight loss
    - diarrhoea
    - recurrent infections

  • Unprotected sex (vaginal, oral, anal)
  • Sharing sex toys
  • Men who have sex with men
  • People with a current or previous partner with HIV
  • Sharing injecting equipment (e.g. syringes)

HIV is treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART). While it’s not a cure, ART helps people live healthy lives and reduces transmission risk.

Hepatitis B & C

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver tissue usually caused by viral infections or drinking excessive alcohol.

Symptoms Risk factors Treatment
  • Pain or bloating in the belly area.
  • Dark urine and pale or clay-colored stools.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Fever
  • Exposure to infected blood and body fluids
  • Tattoos, piercings or blood transfusions abroad
  • Sharing injecting equipment (e.g. syringes)
  • Being a sex worker or having sex with sex workers
  • Having unprotected sex with a partner from high-risk countries

Hepatitis treatment depends on the type but often includes antiviral medications to reduce liver damage and manage the infection.

FAQs

Why test for STIs?

Many STIs often don’t show any symptoms so the only way to confirm if you have an STI is to get tested. Regular screening is important as it helps detect infections early so treatment can be started immediately if needed. This helps to reduce the risk of serious health complications.

What are the consequences of untreated STIs?

Some curable STIs can be dangerous if they aren’t treated and may lead to significant health issues. This may include infertility, genitourinary cancers and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Which symptoms need urgent clinical care?

You can test online, unless you have any of these symptoms:

  • Pelvic pain or unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Rectal discharge or bleeding
  • Large amounts of discharge from the penis
  • Sudden pain in the testicles
  • Genital ulcers or sores
  • Fever or feeling hot and cold
  • Joint pains
  • Eye symptoms
  • Throat swelling or difficulty swallowing

These symptoms need urgent clinical assessment and additional investigations that we cannot offer online. You can find your local sexual health clinic here:

England
Wales
Scotland
Ireland

How do I know which test kit is right for me?

You will need to consider your sexual history, current symptoms, and risk factors. If you're not sure, you can either:

  • Let us help you choose. Answer a few questions and we'll advise you which kit is best.
  • Choose the Complete STI test kit. This tests for most STIs.
  • For trans women, we recommend taking a urine test, including those who have undergone vaginoplasty.
  • For trans men with a vagina, we recommend using a vaginal swab for testing. If you have had phalloplasty, we suggest taking a urine test.

Can I use the test kit if I’m pregnant?

We advise against using home-test kits for pregnant women. All pregnant women are offered blood tests to check for certain STIs at their first antenatal appointment.

Testing for STIs during pregnancy is crucial for protecting both the mother and baby as STIs can be passed to babies during pregnancy and birth. This can cause complications such as premature birth or a low birth weight.

How do I collect the sample?

Our STI test kits are designed to be easy to use. Each kit comes with clear instructions on how to take your samples.

Urine sample: you have to pee into the urine collection container. Download the full instructions.

Blood sample: you will use a finger-prick device to collect a small blood sample. Download the full instructions.

Vaginal swab: you will use a cotton swab to collect a vaginal sample. Download the full instructions.

Throat swab: you will use a cotton swab to collect a sample from the back of your throat. Download the full instructions.

Rectal swab: you will use a cotton swab to collect a rectal sample. Download the full instructions.

How will I receive my test results?

Once the lab has received your sample, you’ll be notified by SMS and email as soon as your results are ready. This usually takes up to 48 hours.

You can securely access your test results through your HealthExpress member’s area on our website. Your results will be presented clearly, with explanations and next steps provided.

If you test positive for an STI, we will recommend the best treatment for you or guide you on where to get help.

How do I get treatment?

If your test results indicate that you have an STI, we can assist you with the next steps. It's important you avoid all sexual activity until you are given further advice.

Online treatments: For infections like chlamydia, HealthExpress can provide a prescription for the appropriate treatment. This can be ordered and delivered directly to your door.

Guidance for other STIs and onward referral: If you test positive for gonorrhoea, HIV, syphilis, or hepatitis, our team will guide you on the next steps. This might involve contacting your local sexual health clinic. More information can be found by clicking the links below:

What if I did not receive the test kit or my results?

Your test kit is sent with a tracking code. You can find the code in the dispatch email or in your member area.

If you did not receive your results 3 working days after returning your samples, please check the tracking code provided on the return envelope on the Royal Mail website.

If this does not solve your issue, please contact our Customer Service Team and we will help resolve the issue.

How accurate are STI kits?

Our test kits are highly accurate when used correctly. We use the same tests, methods and technology as used in sexual health clinics, ensuring reliable results.

Our test diagnostics are conducted in a laboratory with UKAS Medical laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189). No test is 100% accurate, so there's a small chance that the test will give you a negative result when you do have the infection. It's rare but also possible for the test to be positive when you haven't got the infection.

How can I avoid STIs?

When used correctly and consistently, condoms are one of the most effective methods of protection against STIs. Other methods include staying up to date with vaccinations (e.g. hepatitis B and HPV), limiting your number of sexual partners and regularly getting tested.

Is this process confidential?

Yes, your privacy is our utmost priority. From the moment you order your test kit to the time you receive your results, your privacy is fully protected. We handle all information and communications discreetly and securely.

We securely store your personal information and test results. You can access these through your private HealthExpress account. We adhere to strict data protection standards to ensure your confidentiality.

Are there free STI testing kits available?

While our test kits are competitively priced, you may also find free STI testing services through local health departments or sexual health clinics.

Our at-home kits let you test whenever and wherever you want, without needing to wait for appointments or travel to a clinic.
