Why test for STIs?
Many STIs often don’t show any symptoms so the only way to confirm if you have an STI is to get tested. Regular screening is important as it helps detect infections early so treatment can be started immediately if needed. This helps to reduce the risk of serious health complications.
What are the consequences of untreated STIs?
Some curable STIs can be dangerous if they aren’t treated and may lead to significant health issues. This may include infertility, genitourinary cancers and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Which symptoms need urgent clinical care?
You can test online, unless you have any of these symptoms:
- Pelvic pain or unusual vaginal bleeding
- Rectal discharge or bleeding
- Large amounts of discharge from the penis
- Sudden pain in the testicles
- Genital ulcers or sores
- Fever or feeling hot and cold
- Joint pains
- Eye symptoms
- Throat swelling or difficulty swallowing
These symptoms need urgent clinical assessment and additional investigations that we cannot offer online. You can find your local sexual health clinic here:

How do I know which test kit is right for me?
You will need to consider your sexual history, current symptoms, and risk factors. If you're not sure, you can either:
- Let us help you choose. Answer a few questions and we'll advise you which kit is best.
- Choose the Complete STI test kit. This tests for most STIs.
- For trans women, we recommend taking a urine test, including those who have undergone vaginoplasty.
- For trans men with a vagina, we recommend using a vaginal swab for testing. If you have had phalloplasty, we suggest taking a urine test.
Can I use the test kit if I’m pregnant?
We advise against using home-test kits for pregnant women. All pregnant women are offered blood tests to check for certain STIs at their first antenatal appointment.
Testing for STIs during pregnancy is crucial for protecting both the mother and baby as STIs can be passed to babies during pregnancy and birth. This can cause complications such as premature birth or a low birth weight.
How do I collect the sample?
Our STI test kits are designed to be easy to use. Each kit comes with clear instructions on how to take your samples.
How will I receive my test results?
Once the lab has received your sample, you’ll be notified by SMS and email as soon as your results are ready. This usually takes up to 48 hours.
You can securely access your test results through your HealthExpress member’s area on our website. Your results will be presented clearly, with explanations and next steps provided.
If you test positive for an STI, we will recommend the best treatment for you or guide you on where to get help.
How do I get treatment?

What if I did not receive the test kit or my results?
Your test kit is sent with a tracking code. You can find the code in the dispatch email or in your member area.
If you did not receive your results 3 working days after returning your samples, please check the tracking code provided on the return envelope on the Royal Mail website.
If this does not solve your issue, please contact our Customer Service Team and we will help resolve the issue.
How accurate are STI kits?
Our test kits are highly accurate when used correctly. We use the same tests, methods and technology as used in sexual health clinics, ensuring reliable results.
Our test diagnostics are conducted in a laboratory with UKAS Medical laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189). No test is 100% accurate, so there's a small chance that the test will give you a negative result when you do have the infection. It's rare but also possible for the test to be positive when you haven't got the infection.
How can I avoid STIs?
When used correctly and consistently, condoms are one of the most effective methods of protection against STIs. Other methods include staying up to date with vaccinations (e.g. hepatitis B and HPV), limiting your number of sexual partners and regularly getting tested.
Is this process confidential?
Yes, your privacy is our utmost priority. From the moment you order your test kit to the time you receive your results, your privacy is fully protected. We handle all information and communications discreetly and securely.
We securely store your personal information and test results. You can access these through your private HealthExpress account. We adhere to strict data protection standards to ensure your confidentiality.
Are there free STI testing kits available?
While our test kits are competitively priced, you may also find free STI testing services through local health departments or sexual health clinics.
Our at-home kits let you test whenever and wherever you want, without needing to wait for appointments or travel to a clinic.
