More information about Vesicare
Vesicare (solifenacin) is a medication used to treat urinary incontinence, as well as other symptoms of overactive bladder such as a strong urge to urinate and/or increased urine frequency. It acts on the muscarinic receptors around the bladder helping to reduce bladder muscle spasms, thus keeping these uncomfortable symptoms at bay.
Vesicare offers a clinically effective subtle approach to treating overactive bladder when compared with traditional methods of using incontinence pads.
As your bladder fills, it expands, triggering a message to the brain telling you to go to the toilet. Your bladder then contracts causing you to urinate. If you have urinary incontinence, your bladder contracts before it expands causing the symptoms of the condition.
The active ingredient Solifenacin belongs to a group known as antimuscarinics, and all work in the same way to treat urinary incontinence. Solifenacin prevents these spasms by relaxing the muscle cells, making the bladder more effective at retaining urine and preventing urine leaks. This means you are less likely to feel the urge to go, less likely to need to urinate so often and reduced urine leak.
The active ingredient, Solifenacin, improves the awkward symptoms of incontinence and aims to reduce urinary urgency and increase bladder capacity.
By reducing these muscle spasms, you may also find your bladder at more ease. All of these factors make you more comfortable and can help increase your confidence.
Available in tablet form, the starting recommended dose of Vesicare is 5mg to be taken daily. This can be increased to 10mg if the symptoms have not improved. The course of treatment will usually last for four weeks. This course should be completed unless a doctor advises you otherwise.
All of our medication comes with a certified patient information leaflet that should be read fully before starting the treatment. The leaflet is also available at the bottom of the page as a downloadable PDF.
The tablets are available to buy in 5mg and 10mg, depending on the severity of your symptoms. Typically, you will be offered the lower 5mg dose first, with scope to increase to 10mg if the symptoms haven't improved.
Like all prescription medications, Vesicare comes with a risk of side effects. In most cases, these reactions are mild and are usually temporary, with a large percentage of people not experiencing any side effects whatsoever. Possible side effects include:
Severe side effects includes any of the above that are unmanageable or prolonged, as well as signs of a kidney infection such as frequent urinating, fever or blood in the urine. If you're experiencing any severe side effects, or any symptoms linked to a allergic reaction, you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical help.
It's always recommended that you read the patient Information Leaflet before beginning a course of treatment.
Though Vesicare (solifenacin) is clinically proven to be a safe medication, it will not be suitable for everyone. Certain conditions may prevent the use of this medication such as:
